New Teams Meeting button is missing from Calendar events when creating meetings in Outlook

Viewed 3

The Teams meeting button ("New Teams Meeting" in classic Outlook, or the Teams toggle in new Outlook) can disappear from the Calendar/event-creation ribbon, preventing users from scheduling Teams meetings directly from Outlook. In classic Outlook this is usually caused by Outlook automatically disabling the Teams Meeting COM add-in for performance reasons (or the add-in failing to reinstall properly after a New Teams update). In new Outlook, it is typically caused by a mismatched sign-in account, a personal/non-Microsoft 365 account, or a corrupted calendar "default online meeting provider" setting. Impact is limited to convenience (users can still create a Teams meeting separately and paste the join link), but it blocks the normal one-click scheduling workflow.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Use classic Outlook Desktop with the Teams Meeting add-in installed, or new Outlook signed into a personal/mismatched account.
  2. Open a new Calendar event.
  3. Observe that the "New Teams Meeting" button (classic) or Teams toggle (new Outlook) is absent from the ribbon/event window.

Workaround: Create the meeting in Teams directly, copy the meeting join link, and paste it manually into the Outlook calendar invite. Also, prevent recurring disabling via the registry: set HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Outlook\Resiliency\DoNotDisableAddinList with a TeamsAddin.FastConnect value of 1.

Severity: Minor (annoying and blocks a convenience workflow, but a straightforward workaround exists and it does not cause data loss or crashes)
Affected product: Microsoft Outlook (with Microsoft Teams integration)
Affected platforms: Windows, macOS
Affected versions: Classic Outlook (Office 2016–2021 and Microsoft 365), new Outlook, Outlook for Mac
Fixed versions: Not yet available for the general add-in auto-disabling issue (Microsoft describes ongoing work); the specific "add-in missing after New Teams update" scenario is marked resolved via the reinstall steps above, not a specific version number

  • Classic Outlook, add-in disabled: File > Manage COM Add-ins > expand Teams Meeting Add-in options > "Do not monitor this add-in for the next 30 days" (or "Always enable this add-in"), or re-enable it via File > Options > Add-ins > Disabled Items.
  • Classic Outlook, add-in missing after a New Teams update: uninstall "Teams Meeting Add-in" via Settings > Apps > Installed apps, close Outlook and Teams, restart New Teams to trigger reinstallation, then restart Outlook. Microsoft lists this specific scenario as resolved with these steps.
  • New Outlook: ensure Teams and Outlook are signed into the same Microsoft 365 work/school account, and enable the Teams meeting toggle when creating an event (not available for personal/family Microsoft accounts).
  • General: update Teams to the latest version and run Office Quick Repair/Online Repair; ensure .NET 4.8 and WebView2 are installed, since their absence can cause the add-in to be disabled.
