Time filters return results from unrelated dates when filtering by recency in Google Search

Selecting a recency filter under Google Search's "Tools" menu — Past hour, Past 24 hours, Past week, Past month, Past year, or a custom date range — stopped constraining results. Instead the results page mixed in pages from arbitrary dates, often years old, as if no filter had been applied. The failure was server-side and global, reproducing across different Google accounts, devices, operating systems, networks, and fresh browser profiles. It particularly affected people who rely on recency to verify current information, such as journalists and analysts.

Steps to reproduce:

  1. Go to google.com and run any search query.
  2. Open the Tools menu below the search box.
  3. From the time dropdown ("Any time"), select Past week (or any other timeframe, or a custom range).
  4. Observe that returned results include pages published well outside the selected window.

Workaround: Use date operators directly in the query instead of the dropdown, e.g. after:2026-07-01 or after:2026-07-01 before:2026-08-01. The "Sort by date" option also continued to work.

Severity: Medium (a widely used core feature returned silently wrong results worldwide, but there was no crash, data loss, or security impact, and a query-operator workaround existed)
